Monarch Caterpillar and Chrysalis
We were walking in the garden with friends one afternoon, when one of the children saw a caterpillar on a plant. He asked what to do, I said, "Squish it." All of the caterpillars we'd seen so far had been gypsy moth caterpillars. Friend said, " No, it is a Monarch caterpillar." So child didn't squish it, instead we took it inside with some milkweed where it promptly set up housekeeping. I googled Monarch caterpillars and recognized that the distinctive "J" shape meant the caterpillar was going to create its chrysalis very soon. And it did. Not only soon, but very fast. In the time it took Daddy to shower, it had gone from "J" shaped caterpillar to the green with yellow stripes chrysalis. Not long after it was totally green. A day or so later, there were gold looking dots on the chrysalis. Beautiful! According to a Monarch website it should hatch in 10 days. For now it is a lovely centerpiece on my kitchen table.
