Sunday Evening, December 28th Little Brother asked me what a spot was on his scalp. I replied it was probably a pimple. The next morning he asked me about another spot, another pimple I replied. That evening he asked me what was itching on his back, I looked and thought chicken pox?! I took him to the doctor for a confirmation, yep, chicken pox.My children have all had the vaccine for chicken pox so I didn't think they would get them. Of course this fall/winter I have heard of two other families who had the chicken pox after their children were vaccinated.
According to the CDC website 8-9/10 persons who have been vaccinated are completely protected from the chickenpox virus. And those who have been immunized and still get chicken pox have a mild case with less than 50 lesions, most of which do not become open sores, last a few days and do not run a fever.
I would consider Little Brother's case mild, but he did have a fever (only one night), he had more than 5o lesions, they all became open sores and he wasn't scabbed over and non contagious for over a week.
oh, and NOW the CDC recommends a second dose of the varicella immunization at the 4-6 year old check up. This is a very new recommendation as my 6 year old who had her kindergarden shots when she was 5 did not get a booster.
